For many prospective drivers, the biggest challenge begins not with learning the Traffic Rules, but as the practical exam approaches. Even after successfully completing driving school, questions often arise: what is the difference between the school and "Regitra" exams, how long are their results valid, what documents are needed, and what mistakes most often lead to a failed exam.

Although the driving exam causes stress for many, its process is clearly defined, and success is usually determined not by chance, but by proper preparation and understanding of what the examiner expects. Knowing the exam procedure, evaluation criteria, and common mistakes can make you feel much more confident even before you sit behind the wheel.

Driving Exam

While still learning driving theory (or having successfully passed the theory exam at "Regitra"), you can start preparing for the driving exam at a driving school. You will have 30 mandatory academic hours (for category B) of practical driving at the school, followed by the school driving exam. After passing the school driving exam, you can take the VĮ "Regitra" practical driving exam. Not everyone succeeds in passing the exams on the first try, so don't hesitate to take additional lessons to ensure your skills when going for the "Regitra" driving exam.

School Driving Exam

You must prepare for the practical driving exam at a driving school, where you will need to complete at least 30 academic hours in total with a driving instructor. The instructor will initially teach you the required driving maneuvers in a practice area, and later you will drive on city streets and routes approved by VĮ "Regitra".

You will learn to drive with a specially equipped vehicle that has additional pedals for the instructor, allowing them to brake or perform other maneuvers if necessary.

After completing the mandatory 30 academic hours of driving, you must pass the school driving practical exam at your driving school. If you do not succeed on the first try, you can retake the exam. The school driving exam is an excellent opportunity to prepare for the "Regitra" exam and identify your driving strengths and weaknesses.

How long is the school driving exam valid?

The school exam/course completion certificate does not have an expiration date. This means that after passing the driving exam at school, you have an unlimited time to take the practical exam at "Regitra". It is important to remember that a successfully passed theory exam at "Regitra" is valid for one year, during which you must pass the practical driving exam at "Regitra".

"Regitra" Driving Exam

You can take the "Regitra" driving exam if you have successfully passed the driving theory exam at "Regitra", completed the required number of practical driving hours at a driving school with an instructor, and passed the school driving exam.

How long does the driving exam last?

The practical driving exam lasts up to 90 minutes.

Driving Exam Registration

You can register for the exam in 3 ways, which are listed below:

• Online. When registering online, you can register for exams, cancel registration, change exam dates and times, view schedules, and information about taken exams.

• By phone +370 700 55151. By phone, you can only register for the exam or cancel it.

• At a "Regitra" branch. When registering for exams at a "Regitra" branch, you must present your identity document.

How much does the driving exam at "Regitra" cost?

The cost of the driving exam at "Regitra" depends on the category you are aiming to obtain:

• A, A1, A2 – 77.90 EUR;

• B – 41.26 EUR;

• C – 89.54 EUR;

• CE – 94.54 EUR.

VĮ "Regitra" Driving Exam – Procedure

• Arrival, document check. It is advisable to arrive at least 30 minutes early for the exam. Upon arrival at the customer service area, take your queue number and wait for your turn to present your identity document, fill out the application, and pay for the practical exam. Later, the examiner will meet you, and after confirming your identity, you will proceed to the car. The examiner, car, and parking method are chosen randomly.

• Car. The light vehicle (category B) driving exam will be taken with a "Regitra" car, while C, CE, or A1, A2 category exams can be taken with your own vehicle. As with the school exam, "Regitra" cars intended for examination have additional pedals for the examiner.

• Familiarization with the exam process. Once in the car, the examiner will introduce you to the exam process and instruments. Before starting the practical driving exam, you can try driving, adjust the seat, steering wheel, seatbelt, and mirrors.

• Questions. Before the practical driving exam, the examiner will ask you 3 questions related to traffic safety and vehicle operation. All possible questions can be found in the Register of Legal Acts.

• Driving. The practical exam consists of street driving and special maneuvers. During the driving, the examiner will ask you to perform several special driving maneuvers. The driving exam will take place on the street, under real traffic conditions.

• Filming. The practical exam is filmed.

• End of the exam. After completing the designated route and returning to the "Regitra" area, you will immediately find out whether you passed the exam and how many and what kind of mistakes you made. 

Documents Required for the "Regitra" Driving Exam

When arriving for the practical exam, have the following documents with you:

• Identity document;

• Driver's medical certificate (medical institutions provide only electronic medical certificates, which "Regitra" receives automatically).

Also, before arriving for the exams, your driving school must transfer data to "Regitra" about completed training. Of course, you must have also passed the "Regitra" theory exam beforehand.

Driving Exam – Critical Mistakes

During the practical exam, 3 types of mistakes can be recorded:

• Non-critical – an action that shows an insufficient level of the examinee's skills but does not pose a threat to any road user or hinder the safe control of the vehicle;

• Specific recurring – six non-critical mistakes when performing the same evaluated action;

• Critical – an action that shows an inappropriate level of the examinee's abilities or carelessness towards other road users. It can also pose or poses a threat to road users, can hinder or hinders the safe control of the vehicle.
