Driving categories 2026: Descriptions, requirements, notes

In order to drive vehicles, you must obtain the appropriate driving category. The most popular driving category is B, which includes passenger cars, but depending on your needs, you can also drive A, C, D, T and adjacent categories. The requirements for it depend on the category of driving rights you want to obtain. Let's take a look at what vehicles can be driven with different categories and what the requirements are for them.

KET tickets are the main tool for testing theoretical knowledge used in driving exams for various driving categories. Each driving category has specific requirements and rules, the knowledge of which is tested during theoretical exams. Driving theory can best be learned by solving simulated Regitra tests. We offer to try a free ket test by clicking here .

Driving categories 2026: Descriptions, requirements, notes

Many drivers are well acquainted with Category B, but the driver's license system encompasses far more possibilities. Depending on the type of vehicle you plan to drive—motorcycle, car, truck, bus, or a vehicle with a trailer—a different category may be required, each with its own acquisition requirements.

The chosen category determines not only the minimum age or training procedure but also which vehicles you will be able to drive in the future. Some categories automatically grant the right to drive vehicles assigned to smaller categories, so it's worth understanding their differences and possibilities in advance.

This article provides all the driving categories valid in Lithuania, their descriptions, age requirements, and key notes to help you choose the most suitable path towards obtaining a driver's license.

Driving Categories

There are a total of 16 different driving license categories, which we review below.

Yes. To obtain a category A license, you must pass both theory and practical exams at Regitra, even if you already hold category B.

Passengers may only be carried on vehicles designed or adapted for it, in designated seats. It is forbidden to transport children under 12 on mopeds, motorcycles (except with sidecars), tricycles, or any type of quadricycles.

Yes. They are different categories: D – buses, C – trucks.

Both theory and practical exams are required. Drivers aged 24 or older, or those with at least 2 years of category B experience and who have completed the A1 practical training, may be granted the right to drive A1 vehicles. In such cases, a national code is added to the B category on the license instead of listing A1 separately.

In most cases, category C1E is required.

Category B allows driving TR1 tractors. Categories C1, C, C1E, CE, D, D1, DE, or D1E also allow driving TR1, TR2 tractors and SZ self-propelled agricultural machines. A separate tractor license is not required if you already hold the proper driver’s license.

The AM category can be obtained from the age of 15. This category grants the right to drive mopeds and light quadricycles. Currently, to obtain the AM category, it is sufficient to pass the theory exam – there is no need to take a practical driving exam. However, from November 1, 2026, a new regulation will come into effect: the AM category will be obtainable from the age of 16, and to receive a driver's license, both theory and practical exams will need to be passed.
